God is the Light of the heavens and earth. His Light is like this: there is a niche, and in it a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, a glass like a glittering star, fueled from a blessed olive tree from neither east nor west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it- light upon light- God guides whoever He will to his Light; God draws such comparisons for people; God has full knowledge of everything- 24:35
This verse of light in the Qur’an from Surah An-Nur is explained beautifully by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya in his book Al-Wabil al Sayyib min al-Kalim at-Tayyib (The Invocation of God). The comparison being made here is to the heart of a believer, wherein there is a lamp, which bears light. The fuel for this Lamp of Faith is from the blessed olive tree, and itself is so crystalline and free from all impurities that it almost glows by itself. When the fuel of Allah’s revelation reaches it, there is Light Upon Light— such is the illumination of a believer’s heart.
